Hanging paper lanterns can create a mood that pushes your party space over the finish line, but it can also damage your ceiling. Hang them with thumbtacks, and you’re left with tiny holes in the ceiling. Using tape will peel the paint. Screwing in cup hooks will leave you with holes that need to be spackled and painted. Is the ambiance worth it? Of course, it’s worth it, but you don’t have to go through all that trouble.
I hung these paper lanterns from a peony ring, which I borrowed from my mother’s garden shed, and 3M Command toggle hooks. Not only were the 3M Command hooks easy to apply to the ceiling, but they were super simple to remove. Cradling the peony ring in four hooks allowed me to adjust the positions of the three largest lanterns at the center of the cluster before hanging them. I applied the hooks that held the ring, and then I removed the ring. I strung the lanterns on the peony ring, adjusted the spacing, and then placed it back in the hooks. The smaller lanterns that surround the center cluster are hung from individual 3M Command hooks.
I used the peony ring because it was what I had available at the time. Not everyone is a gardener with peony rings on hand. Amazon has numerous choices of more attractive alternatives. The link to one of them is below. Click on the photo for the link.
I bought these paper lanterns from Oriental Trading Company, but it’s also fun to make your own. You can’t always find the right colors, so buy plain white lanterns and decorate your own with watercolor paints and mulberry paper. I am working on a set now, and I will share them with you soon.
