Christmas Tree Garlands
Last year’s “Vintage Greeting Card Christmas Ball Ornaments” were the inspiration for these garlands. Those 4” ornaments which took me weeks to complete looked fabulous on our tree, but I wasn’t satisfied. The tree still needed something. Christmas trees are always a work in progress at our house and some trees are never finished.
I wasn’t sure what this tree was missing until I started fiddling with the paper circles/triangles leftover from last year’s project, and that’s when it came to me. I constructed the first 2 ½” sphere, and I knew immediately a garland of these spheres would be the final touch. I used the holiday cards that we received last year along with pastel card stock, lots of glitter and glue. One hundred spheres later, the garland and the tree were complete. I made the statement last year that I was finished folding paper circles. The people who know me and who heard the declaration nodded their heads with an air of “Bless her little heart!” They knew that I wasn’t finished folding paper circles.
You would think that constructing 100 spheres would have been the final blow to the pinata, but it wasn’t. Inspiration struck again! I couldn’t stop imagining the spheres as planets as I strung the first garland together. A “Galaxy Garland” was orbiting my brain. Images of lunar surfaces, nebulae, planets and deep space were printed out on card stock, and my dear friend’s Star Wars themed Christmas tree was born. This time I spaced the spheres further apart with more wood beads. It was appropriate for the look of the garland, but it also meant that I only had to make sixty spheres versus one hundred. Whew!
My head’s telling me that I really am finished folding paper circles again, but the echo of “Bless her little heart!” is still ringing in my ears. May your holidays be blessed, and I don’t mean in a little heart kind of way.
